I have been trying to install update 2. All that happens is that I get a timeout and a "page cannot be displayed" message. I am using IE as front-end. Is there anything else to do other than this?

Yes : go to ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/updates/5.0/Update2, download and install everything and you're done... You can do the same for Update 3...
