Disappointed with SME 7
« on: February 15, 2006, 03:36:20 PM »
Having slogged through several downloads of SME 7 until the ISO came up with no checksum errors I was disappointed after the install and applying the YUM updates that some functionality that I expected in the Server Manager was not there in control panels.

In particular there was no control panel for Clamav or Spamassassin even though they appear to have been installed? And there does not appear to be any reporting? What RBLs are being used which I find a necessity when I am getting clobbered on average of 1500 spam junk a day?

Yum update works fine though configuring for any other yum repository brings on all sorts of strange errors. Also there is no other System Update panel to tell you what RPMs are installed and to readily permit RPMs to be installed or removed.

I am wary about using this server for email when control that I have become used to with procmail, Spamassassin and the use of the junkmail filters seems to be lacking compared to SME 6 and 6.5.

There appears to be some sort of virus filtering of HTML content but no ready reporting method?

Dans Guardian is needed for HTML content filtering but apart from buying the control panels through Dungog and getting them from a yum repository that may not work there is no HTML filtering control?

There is no graphical System Monitor that works.

With hope I looked at Knudsens website for salvation but there contribs are tested on SME 6 and 6.5 only.

So I think that it is still early days for SME 7 until these control panels and enhancements, readily available on SME 6 and 6.5 become available on SME 7.

>>So I think that it is still early days for SME 7<<
It's not even ready yet. Most of features you've missed are not part of the core distro and never been. Add-ons may be available some time after the SME7 final released and its up to contributors.

If you that much dissapointed with beta version of future version of SME, just ask for your money back and don't use it untill all the functionality that you "have become used to" is there.

Sure there is.....what version of 7 do you have, here's 7pre1 stuff, tested
and ready to, should take you all of 1 min. to install.

Right Here

Try the Development button to the left..

Phpsysinfo

Also phpmyadmin for mysql.

Both work on 7pre1.

So quit your bitch'in and start pitch'in.....IN.

There's a whole lot of stuff to do for v7 yet.

Now that the forum is reorg'd thing's should improve around here....FINALLY..!!

netdesiggns, perhaps 7.0 is so disappointing just because it lacks all the contributions that you could have made, but didn't.

The development team (and it is a very small team) has put hundreds (no, thousands) of hours into making this a stable, robust release and a base for the future. The contrib developers are working on making their contribs compatible with SME7.

Now what are you planning to do to help with the deficiencies you mentioned?

- Writing code
- Testing
- Documentation
- Monitoring the forums
- Donating money
- Sponsoring development
...
............

First the improvment to the forum is great.

I suggest you also add another catagory "Welcome to SME" that is locked.

With for one, the standards for posting ie

Quote

Also if you get a pkg working please add it to the Wiki link above and
standardize the headings ie.

SME 7.x
SME 6.x
SME 5.x

So when a search is done on "SME 7.x" eveything associated will be returned and be sure to include the version of SME you tested on and
the date in your post for clarity and any warnings/notes you may have.

IMHO by far, is trying to deceminate what software version install you
need for your version of SME and then trying to find the right one..

It's a big Mumbo Jumbo out there and to someone who is new to SME it
just has to be Mind Blowing.

There's 54 users right now searching the forum, that's a lot of bandwith and CPU cycles going down the drain.

Quote
SME Core system bugs should be reported to the Bugzilla bug tracker links to the left for your version of SME.

Howto deceminate if you have a isolated problem or a bug.

Also had an idea to modify Bugzilla for installation information purposes only and maintain Bugzilla for just core system bugs.

With a few word changes it would make an excellent Installation Tracker.

By doing that the bug tracker won't become diluted with non default
software installation problems and only core system bugs would be
maintained within, making  it easier for the dev's.

The reason I mention this is b/c the Wiki is a bit troublesome to use and
therefore most do not use it.
Damed if I can figure out how to use it completely.

Go here and look at how it has scrolled off to the right

SME7 Contribs Right Here

What a mess, and I tried to fix that and I made it worse and spent an
hour trying to fix my fix.

Scrolling back and forth to read something is a big pain in the you know what.
Besides I need to save that wrist action for other things.

Hey watch it...!!

I could have spent my time getting something instaled / fixed / running
and I assure you I will in the future.

Anyway see what might be done and again the forum looks much better.
That little change should make a big differance around here.

There is a category in the bug tracker called contribs.org website.  Please add a report for any changes you think should be made.  I miss lots of forum posts, but will definitly see a bug report.

You have lots of good ideas, and we need people to put them in to place especially in editing some of the main wiki pages.  Do you want to write a newbie guide?  Email staff_at_contribs.org if you want to help out with something and introduce yourself.  Thanks

Have a closer look in the email settings panel.
