USB ADSL router with SME 6.0.1 - Have I finished?
« on: November 28, 2005, 02:17:04 PM »
Guys,
After some weeks of fiddling about, I managed to get my Speedtouch USB ADSL router working with SME (thank you Benoit and Sylvian for the HowTo's). Now, after running 'speedtouch-start', I can ping IP addresses on the internet and when I run 'ipconfig', I see ppp0 as well as the eth0 interface as valid connections.

My question is: is that all I need to do? Surely I need to let e-smith know that it is to act as a firewall between the ppp0 and eth0 interfaces?

In order to do this, I tried to reconfigure the server using the configuration menu option while logged in as admin, but I cannot see the ppp0 interface listed when I choose server and gateway.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Regards
Pete

Your question is one that asks if a USB connected router will engage the firewall automatically.

You need ppp0 (the USB interface) and eth0 to be in place rather than eth0 and eth1.

Assuming your are running 6.0.1 (I don't know about 6.5), have a look at http://www.hgs.co.uk/sme/alcatel/ where, for version 4.X of e-smth (a loooong time ago) there was a note about USB connected Alcatel Speedtouch Modems. It may be no use but it may give you some ideas.

Maybe others can clear up the technicalities?

Thank you for your reply, Chris,
Your summary is correct, I had two ethernet cards; 1 for the internal LAN and 1 to an ethernet router, but replaced the ethernet router with an Alcatel Speedtouch USB router for various reasons (I am committed to using the USB box now - damn!).

I used the How To you quote, but could not get it to work so searched around for a few days and found this http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/speedtouch/speedtouch/doc-linux/howto/SpeedTouch-HOWTO-en.html?rev=HEAD which got the USB router going and allowed me to ping external (public) IP addresses.

Now this may be all I need to do, but I don't see any reference to it in the server-manager configuration page. I am worried that I have not finished the configuration.

Does anyone else use a USB router and, if so, what server-manager configuration did you use?

Does anyone know why the ppp0 interface does not appear as a source in the server manager configuration dialog when I configure SME as server/gateway?

I'd be very greatful for any help the community could give.

Thank you in advance

Regards
Pete
