Compatible modem list please

Hello again

I’ve given up trying to make my conexant modem router work properly with SME, I just can’t get it to allow the web server onto the net. So I looked around the shack and found an Alcatel USB modem (stingray).

I searched this site and found a link or even two links on how to install it. http://no.longer.valid/mylinks/singlelink.php?cid=91&lid=197 but this is a link dead.

info taken from the above page “If you to understand how it works, follow this how-to... otherwise try the Jerome Savin's contrib.” I also can’t find Jerome Savin's contrib on the site.

I would really appreciate information on what modems you guys are running. It would be great to build a list of usable modems. To tell you the truth it would be great to build up a compatible hardware list. This would help lots of other noobs such as me.

Regards

Brit

Hey Brit,
the general rule of thumb for hardware compatibility is if it is supported by Red Hat 7.3 it *should* work or can be made to work with a little effort.

For SME 6.x it is RH 7.3 based.
For SME 7.x it is CentOS 4.2 based.

Look in some Red Hat forums to see if there is a module/rpm that can help or tech info.

And of course, you could try it out and post here at Contribs with any issues and see if anyone can help!
Good luck.

Hey Brit,
I got my Speedtouch USB modem working on SME server 6.01 by using various How To's and docs from a number of sources, including the one you quote.

When configured, this will allow you to ping external IP adresses, but you may find problems configuring it fully for use with the SME server.  The configuration option from the admin account's menu doesn't recognise the pppd connection (at least not as far as I could see, but maybe I was looking in the wrong place).

This makes me worry that although there is a valid internet conenction, SME may not recognise it as the only intenret source and may not act as a firewall for it.

I posted a question about this a few weeks back but have not had any solutions yet (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=29723.msg124607#msg124607).

Good luck.
