Opening TCP ports
« on: December 09, 2005, 04:38:23 AM »
I have spent the day looking around on the forum to try resolve this but had no joy.

I am trying to open my SME box to allow port TCP 8080 and TCP 33366 for a programe called Service Desk. I have got th rpm installed that allows you to open ports under the SME admin inteface but this does not make any difference when I run nmap it shows as not open. I had a similar problem a few years back when installing hyafax that required port 4559 to allow whfc to connect to it.I managed to get this resolved and it shows when you run nmap, But I can not remember how I resolved that. I have tryed adding lines into masq and iptables with no success.'

Help !!! going mad Box is running as server only one NIC version 6.0.1

masq isn't even enabled in server-only mode, I believe.  It sounds like you're having another issue.  Are you trying to access it from outside your local LAN (i.e. the Internet), or from a local workstation?

As I have said many, many times here, that contrib should be avoided, as what it does can be done another very simple way, and people misunderstand its function and very frequently use it when it cannot help them. I will keep saying it, in the hope that people will find my comments while searching.

IMO, the contrib author should remove that contrib, or at the very least, warn people about the limited set of circumstances in which it might be useful.
