Accessing Ibays from a corrupted SME Server 7.0.beta8
« on: January 05, 2006, 07:48:54 PM »
I'm new to linux but have been running SME Server since 5.0 and have loved it. I recently had a bad power connector drop power to my harddrive while the server was running and corrupted a critical file. The corruption was in such a way that running Anaconda again did not recognize the the existing 7.0.8 installation and only offered the clean install option. Since my Ibays were full of unbacked-up files, I decided to upgrade my harddrive and try to copy the Ibays from the old drive to the new drive. After installing SME on the new drive and recreating the same Ibays, users, and group, I was able to use a Linspire 5.0 Live CD to boot the machine and copy the old files to the new Ibays. Since I created the same users and groups with the same passwords as on the old drive, all the permissions were recognized by the copied files and folders so I was back in business as if nothing ever happened.

I hope this helps someone with a similar situation. SME Server rules!

Knoppix will save you!
Knoppix is your friend!

Long live Knoppix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to take your issue lightly.  Download knoppix, burn to a cd.  Put the knoppix CD in your lame SME server and reboot.  Make sure your SME boxen is on a network that can give it an address (DHCP).  Once Knoppix is booted, you will be able to access your SME partitions (assuming they are not scrambled) and save your beautiful data.  From knoppix you can:

Email your saved files
Compress and ftp your saved files
Turn on Samba and copy your saved files
Too many other options to list.

I use Koppix to fix Windows PC's EVERY DAY.  I would have a hard time doing what I do for a living without tools like KKnoppix.

Good Luck!
