delted 6.0 glibc - rebuild or upgrade to 7.0?
« on: January 11, 2006, 03:06:32 PM »
In attempting to resolve some yum cyclical relationships, I (being the idiot that I am) removed the glibc rpm from my 6.0.1 server (with a bunch of contrib rpm's).

Net result is my bash shell is hosed, I can't log in to a terminal or via ssh, most of my programs don't work etc. (ie. no mount, ls, yum.  Can't connect via samba or afp), so no way to get the glibc on the system to re-install it.

Should I boot off my 6.0.1 iso and "upgrade" to resolve this, or should I boot off 7.0pre1 and upgrade?  I'd rather do the latter, but what is the risk?

What else could I do to restore the server to a functioning state?

Help...  Your thoughts appreciated!

You can do either. I'd be very surprised if either "upgrade" process cared that you didn't already have glibc installed.

Thanks Charlie,

If I've got Jesper's ClamAV and SpamAssassin contribs, as well as the securemail contribs installed, am I going to be crushed upgrading to 7.0pre1?

Would it be safer to "upgrade" to 6.0.1, remove non-standard contribs, then upgrade to 7.0pre1?

thanks!

Quite possibly. I think the securemail contrib will be smoothly replaced during the upgrade, but don't know anything about Jesper's contribs. I've asked if he could test the upgrade process and report back about problems, but he hasn't had time to do that yet. I don't know whether anyone else has tested that upgrade path either.

I would guess so.

Thanks.  I'll go with the 6.01.01 "upgrade" to repair/restore functionality.

What exactly does the upgrade process do in the installer?  Does it replace the rpm database?

Does it replace any data?

Do I need to reinstall non-standard rpm's (mailman etc.) that had been previously installed?

What about RPM's that are newer than what's on the CDROM, like my upgraded PHP rpms etc.

Thanks.
