SME Version 7 Beta - Automatic Updates
« on: January 16, 2006, 03:14:59 AM »
Hi

I was wondering... I have installed SME V7 Beta9. Will the Automatic Updates "automatically" make my server equivelent to the new PRE01 release of the software?

Or do I have to download the ISO and upgrade install it?

If the software DOES in fact update to the newer release, Will the Interface (Server-manager) update to reflect this change and report the version of the software???

Cheers
Aaron

I'd put a caveat on this because smeserver has broken on me a couple of times after it did an automatic upgrade. Upgrading from the cd installer resolves the issues. I can't remember the first but it may just have been the move to a different directory structure on centos. More recently the apache server stopped running, complaining about a malformed ssl line in the httpd.conf. On one site at the same time(I'm not sure if it was the same problem) internet access was also stopped.

So basically, I'd say its safer to use the CD :)

Former SME 7 Alpha and Beta versions were based on CentOS 3.4, 4.0 and 4.1.
An update from a CentOS 4.0 based SME install to a CentOS 4.1 install would certainly have caused some errors.
The devs have taken care for updates in the latest betas. This was no priority in the beginning.

But since SME Beta 8, Beta 9 and Pre1 are all based on CentOS 4.2 and updates are tested thoroughly, I would not care updating via yum.

From my little understanding of how it works, this should be fine. The automatic updates (YUM) update according to what modules have been configured...

You can customise this list of items which get updated and if ASTERISK releases its packages with YUM then even ASTERISK should be able to be upgraded accordingly.

Anyone with advanced knowledge of this subject may wish to confirm or destroy my thoughts for the benefit of this community   :-D

Not sure about automatic updates, but manual updates should work fine if the people distributing the contrib have setup a yum repository .  As an example, take Dungog.net who has a number of contribs available for the SME server.  Dungog has a couple of repos, and subject to some additional lines in /etc/yum.conf being added, one can download and install all of dungog's contribs using yum.  Same for updates.  You can even use cron to check for updates and mail admin when available for download.  Yum is just great!
