help to forward port 80 and domains
« on: January 18, 2006, 06:30:06 PM »
Hi I'm using sme7b8 and and have a seperate web server behind this. I would like all my hosted web sites to be resolved locally and forwarded to my webserver. My webserver runs debian with VHCS and hosts many domains.

I have forwarded port 80 in "port forwarding" and but I also need to somehow get the DNS on sme to resolve other domains and forward them though to my webserver. IS there some way I can change the DNS to say forward www.domainb.co.uk to my local IP of the webserver? At the moment external works fine but if I go to www.domainb.co.uk from any local machine it times out.

Please any help?

Hi. tarif
As for as i know you dont need to forward port 80.
sme uses NAT so there is no need for forwarding port 80.

DNS is just name resolution. but in case you use a name that is in use by
any one outside your network that way the gateway does not where to go to.

If your domain name is the same as a outside name  look at the panel hostname and adresses.
Maybe you must point to a external ip adres with that same name adress.

But first check the gateway adresses on your local systems.
If Sme is your gateway then you must use the internak adress of SME as the gateway adres
hope it i useful for you

forwarding domains

Hi think I'm confused what you mean. I had to forward port 80 from my sme server (192.168.6.1) to another local web server (192.168.6.10) so that all requests from outside my network go straight to the web server. This works fine however I can not locally browse to any of my hosted domains on that webserver - it times out. If I ping the domain I get a response from the external interface IP of my SME server rather than the internal IP of the webserver.

If I add

192.168.6.10 www.domainb.com

to /etc/hosts on SME I can ping the domain from SME server but all my workstations still get ping responses from the external IP of SME.

I hope this clarifies my problem! I simply need to get my local workstations to be able to view my hosted websites as external users do.

I am not a very experience sme user
but i still think that you dont need to forward port 80
try this
look for Configuration--->host names and adresses in the sme server panel
there you can configure the needed http addres and a local ip adres.
that way sme (dns) nows where to go to.
