Topic: Very slow local file transfers...

I have SME 7 pre 1 up and running in server gateway mode.  (Previously I've only used the server option)  My setup is a AMD 1.3Ghz, 1 GB of ram, 1 Sis nic, and one DLink, and a maxtor 250 GB hard drive.

The system routes internal/external traffic fine now. However, transferring files to and from the file server is slow.  When I am transfering a file to and IBay is is somewhat slow, and when I copy it back out of an IBay it is VERY slow (~2 min for a 2.6 megabyte file.  At first I thought it might be the nic, but when transferring to and from a shared folder on another workstation the transfer is almost instant, so I don't think that is the problem.

Any thoughts or things to check would be appreciated.

did you mean that transferring from one workstation to another was fast?  What happens when you transfer from another workstation to the SME?  If that is also slow, the SME may be having trouble.  But it may be a wire, not a nic.

From workstation to workstation was fast, but to the server was so-so, and from the server was VERY slow.

Can you confirm that all connections to the server are slow (from all workstations)

I would assume that is indeed the case, but it is good to confirm that.

Also, try swapping out the ethernet cable on the server's lan nic.  Change ports on the switch that it plugs into.  Try and rule out those things before messing with a nic.

If you decide to swap a nic, you can login as "admin" and run the setup again to configure the new nic.

All connections were slow to the server, but I have fixed the 'problem'.  After  a number of re-boots and different attempts to copy the files,  I re-ran the admin configuration tool and reversed the two NICs (changed internal to external and vice versa).  This seems to have cleared up the problem.  Cables and actual hardware are fine.  Now files copy to the server near-instantly, the same as they were copying between windows clients, and the internet connection is noteably faster as well.

I'll take it - especially at this hour.

This may suggest that the card originally used for internal network (and now used for external) could be faulty. May pay to keep an eye on it...

Hey Darryl,

  Did you do a double swap?  meaning... swap Internal-to-external.... and then sway them back again?

  Or did you just swap?

  I ask because I may be having a similiar problem?  Also... have you tried running iptraf? It's a great tool to quantify things.  Try the second option "General...."

Could your please state here, which NIC was faulty? And the exact Typ of it? Was it the SIS NIC?

Could be interesting for developers and community, if there is a constant problem with specific onboard NIC.
