There may be a better way.  Have a look at this:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-isp/2004/07/msg00041.html

Googling for refresh_pattern windowsupdate gives lots of results.

If you're interested in testing this please raise a New Feature Request bug for SME Future in the bug tracker.

Great! Fantastic!
Hows does one make use of that....????

I am *trying* to learn my way around the beast we know & love as SME, but as n00b struggle when faced with:

# refresh patterns to enable caching of MS windows update
refresh_pattern http://.*\.windowsupdate\.microsoft\.com/ 0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims
refresh_pattern http://office\.microsoft\.com/            0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims
refresh_pattern http://windowsupdate\.microsoft\.com/     0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims

# the next two can be rewritten as one regexp, which should also match other
# SP versions.
#refresh_pattern http://wxpsp2\.microsoft\.com/           0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims
#refresh_pattern http://xpsp1\.microsoft\.com/            0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims
refresh_pattern http://w?xpsp[0-9]\.microsoft\.com/       0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims

# ditto for the next one.
#refresh_pattern http://w2ksp4\.microsoft\.com/           0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims
refresh_pattern http://w2ksp[0-9]\.microsoft\.com/        0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims

refresh_pattern http://download\.microsoft\.com/          0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims

# and some other windows updaters
refresh_pattern http://download\.macromedia\.com/         0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims
refresh_pattern ftp://ftp\.nai\.com/                      0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims
refresh_pattern http://ftp\.software\.ibm\.com/           0 80% 20160 reload-into-ims

whilst learning, having a contrib to look at and pull apart is very useful. Having some more advanced tools (eg to config proxy & firewall) would sure help me learn more about the beast, coz right at the moment, its all dutch to me!

I have installed it on sme7pre4 and found a showstopper bug during the install.

After modifying one line of the httpd.conf file all appears to be ok.

I extracted the files in the .rpm file and *think* I know what needs to be changed - is this the best way to carry on? I quite like the server-manager panel and the options it provides - would it be a good idea to allow admin's to enter their own additional sites?

Cheers,
Bart

It is closed as the contrib is for 6.0 only and the original developer and website have disappeared.
I have installed the following contrib: smeserver-squid_cache_mgt-1.0-2.noarch.rpm

And by increasing cache size and object size have found this works fine and without issues.

From the config. form:
Squid cache size in MB     30000     ufs
Squid cache path    /var/spool/squid
Number of first level directories    16
Number of second level directories    256
Max cached size object    10    MB
Maximum request headers size         KB
Maximum cache time    4    week

So cache size of 30GB and object size of10MB.

Current proxy usage and hit rate is as follows:
Wednesday, 25 April 2007      122.40M     15%
Tuesday, 24 April 2007    2269.75M    18%
Monday, 23 April 2007 1710.19M    12%
Sunday, 22 April 2007 724.11M    10%

Currently we are using 9.3GB of the cache, to improve the hit rate we may increase the object size but for now we are happy with its performance.

Increasing object size is not desired, only if comes from certain domains. Some people have reported success using this contrib on SME7.
