SME 7Pre3 as production server
« on: February 15, 2006, 06:56:04 PM »
Need a few opinions. I need to build a new server for a customer, and am concidering using 7pre3. In your opinion is 7pre3 stable enough. I need it only for server/gateway/pdc function. They are not going to be doing anything trick, just file sharing, and a little internet browsing. It will not even use the email server.  I need to act soon as the sme6.x box is getting strange and they want a little more hourse power.

TIA

Bob

Yes, as far as we know. If you have any issues, please raise them in the bug tracker.

gordonr,

Thanks for the input.

I am planning to migrate from the 6.x server. I am going to use the builtin backup to desktop utility.

The only problem I am expecting is the password situation. I am going to change the passwords to match the 7.0 requirments.

I do have openvpn, raidmonitor,  and sme6admin on the old server. Reading through the forums, I am not sure if I need to remove them or not.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Bob :-D

I have just upgraded from 6 to 7 and i had troubles to make it work. Reason was all the contribs i had installed and i had MANY... So i ended up doing a lot of work an workarounds to get it going, it's a long story....
So based on those experiences i suggest this.

1. Remove those 3 contribs
2. Make a backup from servermanager
3. Upgrade the old server to 7
4. Make another backup from servermanager (Call it somthing else to also have the first one just in case)
5. Install the SME7 on the new server.
6. Load the backup you did from the upgraded old server.

I had a problem to load the backup myself with Mozilla but it worked OK with IE. (Should that be issued as a bug?)

psoren,

I found a script
http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/SME6.0.1Contribs-RemovalScript

to remove most of the rpms that may cause problems. I will run it before doing the server backup.

Thanks for the info

The 4GB limit applies.

That won't be a problem. The difference is only in what policy is applied when new passwords are chosen.

Per,

The removal script didn't do exactly what I thought it would do. Still had to remove openvpn, and sme6admin by hand. No big problem.
I did have some self inflicted problems, but all in all it went well. I wound up using dmay's backup2 to a usb hard drive to get the data off the old server, and restore it to the new server. That part went without a hitch. Due to some trouble on the old server, it took about 3 hours to back up the data. It restored in only a few minutes, and I thought I had made a mistake in the restore settings. But checking the ibays and users, everything looked like it was there. Logging in as a user found all the data.  I had an issue with the nic's. On the old server, one was an onboard SIS, and on the new server it was a VIA. It took a little prodding on my part to get things talking with the proper drivers (and I had had only about 3 hours sleep befor starting this). Everything is working well, and my client is pleased.

I am planning on all servers in the future to be built on SME7 It is working great.

Hmmm.

Here is my confession. For almost a year I have been running a client  on SME 7.0 Alpha7.

12 employees fairly heavy file sharing and any contribs that I could find installed on the server. Waiting for the very finaly release to tell them they need to upgrade.

Later,

Bela.
