Dsl / Pppoe question about static IP.
« on: February 28, 2006, 02:07:58 AM »
Hi,
I am currently setting up SME 7pre3 for a customer who has dsl.  Most of the customers i have are on Cable modems which hand out ip's via dhcp or have a static ip.  This current customer has paid for a static ip through dsl, but it is not active as of right now.  I was able to choose pppoe and obtain a ip via dhcp just to get them up and running until the static ip is active.  They are using a Westell 6100 modem which is a router also.  I set the username and password in the modem, and set the modem to bridge mode.  I then ran the reconfigure this server from the condole and went through and changed it to pppoe and all works fine.  My question is that i did not see where i could specify the static ip when choosing the pppoe option.  I am wondering if since i put the username and password in the 6100 modem itself, do i simply choose static ip and specify the ip like that?  This is my first time using sme with dsl so any help would be huge.
Thanks
Andy

Andy,

I can only talk how it works in New Zealand (but assume it must be very similar elsewhere):

The IP address should be allocated according to your PPPoE userid/password so once the provider confirms the static IP, from the next modem/router restart on that static IP should be the one which the router/modem uses on it's external interface.

In an environment with a SME server, we usually would not use a separate router and instead we would configure the SME server's external NIC to connect via PPPoE (username/password are easy to setup there) and everything works easily. That way you avoid the additional router completely.

Andy,

I have done this a few times with a router and DSL connection. What happens with my ISP is you specify PPPoE and the userid/password that was assigned by the ISP.

If the account is dynamic, you get a different address each time the router restarts or the lease on the address expires. If the account is static, the ISP assigns that fixed address every time the router recycles. It works essentially like a dynamic IP -- but the same address is always assigned. And like DHCP assigned addresses, it also provides gateway and DNS addresses.

Hope this helps.

Ok, just some im clear since their ip is going static tomorrow, once the static ip is turned on and active in verizons head end, the username and password that i put into sme will tell verizon what ip that i need to get.  Which in turn means that there is no way to use pppoe, with a username and password, but specifying a static ip at the same time?
Thanks
Andy

Andy,

That is how my site works and that of several clients.

Your client's account at Verizon will indicate whether it is a dynamic or static ip account, and if static what IP address is assigned. That information is used when your router logs in to Verizon to decide what to do. Based on your description, right now you are getting a random address but starting tomorrow you will get the assigned static ip address every time.

Let us know if you experience something different.

Ok,
Just wanted to wrap up this topic for others who might be lurking like me.
The Static IP was turned on yesterday and i went over to get my customer setup.  In order to get things working right I had to set the DSL Modem into bridge mode to pass everything to the SME box.  I also had to set SME to static and NOT to PPPOE.  It turns out that verizon changes something in the setup of their system so you dont have to send a username and password when you have a static ip.  The nice thing is it has been working flawless as far as external access since the static ip went live!
Thanks for the help
Andy
