The least expensive one I've seen is RAV, which looks like $300 including the first year of updates (subsequent years are about $60/year).  That will handle up to two domains; additional domains will cost extra.  Darrell is a reseller of RAV, and has a pretty good how-to written up on how to install it.

Panda Antivirus Software has a free linux program found at:

http://www.pandasoftware.com      under section titled "home user".

Its beta if I recall but runs well on SME but I don't think there are updates like there are for the other platforms.

I believe those are antivirus suites that scan the hard drive.  I was looking more for something to scan incoming email

Please note that I run RAV on my servers and have no experience with qmail-scanner.

Don't forget to check out RAV for Windows desktops.  It is a great companion to RAV for Linux Mail Servers.

SME Server V5 with ServiceLink, our commercial version, includes virus protection with automatic virus pattern file updates from Trend Micro, our antivirus partner. The current shipping version (5.0) scans all incoming and outgoing e-mail and attachments. Version 5.1, due for release in a month or so, also gives the administrator the option of enabling nightly scans of all user directories and i-bays.

If you're not familiar with ServiceLink, here's how it works. The commercial version of the SME Server software includes Trend Micro's proprietary virus-scanning engine. By default, the server synchronizes with the Mitel Networks NOC (Network Operations Center) once an hour -- the frequency can be customized. As soon as Trend issues a new virus pattern file, it is uploaded to the NOC and automatically installed on all ServiceLink-registered servers during their next scheduled sync.

As mentioned, all incoming and outgoing e-mail messages (including webmail) and attachments are examined against the latest virus pattern files. If a virus or worm is detected, the e-mail is placed in a "quarantine" area where it may be examined or destroyed by the administrator. Simultaneously, the server sends mail to the sender, the intended recipient and the admin notifying them of the virus. The virus is also reported to the NOC, which can be configured to alert the system integrator each time a virus is detected.

The base ServiceLink package includes virus protection for up to 100 user accounts on the server. Our system integrator partners are, of course, free to set their own prices, but the suggested retail price for the ServiceLink base pack is US$175/mo. This includes:

- virus protection
- 24 x 7 monitoring
- guaranteed e-mail delivery
- DNS services
- IPSEC server-to-server VPNs
- server support (including escalation support from Mitel Networks)
- installation kit and updates

Alternatively, a ServiceLink mail protection pack is available for $125/mo per server (suggested retail). This service includes all of the above except the VPN service.

Virus protection for servers with between 101 and 250 user accounts is available at an additional charge.

Of course, our system integrator partners purchase these services at a discount for resale to their customers. They can then make use of our Partner Zone website (https://service.e-smith.com/partners/) to activate ServiceLink for their customers and to both monitor and manage their clients' servers remotely.
