I have installed SME for the first time
I am a newbie in linux but how do i go to the console/root instead of the normal SME start page

There is an option screen in the admin configuration menus called "Select Console Mode" --- it's toward the end of the setup "wizard," after the DHCP setup.  If you select "login" mode, your system will boot to a login prompt.  From there, you login as "admin" if you want to return to the configuration menus, or login as "root" if you want a straight command prompt.

You can access different virtual consoles by pressing Alt-FKey.
Try pressing Alt-F2 to get to the second console and Alt-F1 to get back.
