pinging multiple domain names
« on: January 29, 2006, 01:16:26 PM »
The problem I am having with ibays and multiple doamin names is how the world sees them when sharing a single IP.  For instance, if I ping www.domain1.com I get a return IP address.  What happens when I ping www.domain2.com?  The same IP returns? Or does it not respond, being 'masked' by the primary domain?
I can easily get the A-records and the MX records for both domains changed to point to the one IP, but is this 'legal'?
I presume when email for both domain1 and domain2 arrives at that single IP, SME will accept both?  Are they stored separately or together?
Yours in confusion!

multiple domains on one IP
« Reply #2 on: February 01, 2006, 10:26:03 PM »
No - I didn't get any replies, but I am presuming that it is possible and legal to have multiple domains hosted on one IP address.
I understand that the SME box will host virtual domains, but that implies to me that they are 'hidden' from the outside world, whereas I intend to host 2 xxx.com domains on the one SME server.
In the absence of any replies from this forum I am going to experiment and see what happens.  You can email me direct at jabell@ahc.sa.gov.au to see how it turns out. (better put "SME server" in the subject line so i don't delete it with the spam!)

If www.domain2.com is pointing to same IP then yes, do you have both registered.

You should use a DNS redirector like easydns.com or powerpipe.com even
if your domain is static.

Well you won't get put in jail for it, but not the prefered way to do it.

google virtual domains which is what most servers can do.

Are they stored separately or together?

Start with separately.

www.domain.com          Primary ibay

domain.com/anyother_ibay

There are other ways but that should get you started.

Create an ibay and add an index.html page to

/home/e-smith/files/ibays/html

Access it with......

domain.com/ibay/index.html

servername/ibay/index.html

serverIP/ibay/index.html

Hi,
Here are some step.

1/ have your domains registred with the same IP
  eg. domain.com @ 111.22.33.44
        domain1.com @ 111.22.33.44
        domain2.com @ 111.22.33.44

 I use dynnds.org to register domain and free domain - I have 3 free doamion and 3 register doains all with the same ip.

2/ On you sme server create two new ibays with htlm option enable
   Public access via web or anonymous ftp     = Entire Internet (no password required)
   Execution of dynamic content (CGI, PHP, SSI) = ENabled
   Move deleted files to Recycle Bin  = Enabled

and of course you have the primary ibay.

3/ Add the new doamin to the SME server via the domains panel and point each domain to the appropriate ibay.
 eg  domain.com => primary Ibay
      domain1.com => ibay1  (virtual domain)
      domian2.com => ibay2  (virtual domain)

you can now setup indvidual web site for each doamin under the html directory of the ibays.

You will also be able to receive email under each of the domains. Andy uers that you have setup on your sme server can receive email under any of the domain names setup on your server.

check out these two doains www.gregalmeida.homeip.net, www.icewtr.homeip.net  or www.icednetworks.com (under construction) all of these three domain are under the one server and IP address, and i can receive email on eny of them.

If you need more detailed how-to let me know and I will do one and post it on my web site.

Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Make a pseudonym which delivers 'mail' to your user account. Your mail client can have multiple settings to allow you to send mail from either @domain1.xxx or @domain2.xxx - there's nothing to set up at the server end.

Just a quick note.

you do not have to make any changes on your server, if you have set up the two doamin on your server and have users on it then all the users can recevie email on either of the domain they which, and the email will go to the correct user.

Good luck  :hammer:
