Nice one SilasP!  I like that one too!  In a way the method you describe is better for the poor old server administrator as there's nothing hidden away in third party software.

Hope you're still watching, Dave_D !!

I'm trying to install Boxbackup on an SME 7.0, as per your instructions in the forum (with a few modifications for new versions of development software). I've gotten as far as "make install-backup-client", however I then get this error message:

install: cannot stat `bbackupd': No such file or directory
install: cannot stat `bbackupquery': No such file or directory
install: cannot stat `bbackupctl': No such file or directory
install: cannot stat `bbackupd-config': No such file or directory
make: *** [install-backup-client] Error 1

Could you help me out?

Oz

May I suggest you to have a look at our last BackupPc contribs, that uses (among other proto) rsync.

Hi RV,

as a matter of coincidence, I saw that the new version, 1.05, was released this morning, I was delighted and downloaded it immediately. Thankfully, I'm testing SME on VMWorkstation, and could easily undo all the changes I had made while trying to install Boxbackup.

I haven't yet gotten around to installing and testing the BackupPC contrib, but it looks very good on paper!

Thanks for your advice,

Oz

PS - dave_d, I'd still like to know what went wrong with Boxbackup...

As I am a Linux dummie, I took a different path. If you are going to use another computer to back up your server, you may want to use a "free" Windows program (the horror  ).

All of our clients run some form of Windows and we use sme v6 box as file server.

Google "Syncback SE" I think the website is 2brightsparks.com

It connects over the local network or over the internet (offsight!). I use onsight usb drives that I rotate thru, but I have also run the differential back up from home.

Its very easy to use. I have run it on XP/XP home and 2000 machines. You can either back up a local machine to a server or "farm" files from machines you specify on the network, as long as they are turned on.

Hope that this is helpful.
