Remote backup using backuppc
« on: March 23, 2006, 07:20:32 AM »
Hi,

I'm currently backing up bits and pieces of our sme servers using BackupPC. To have a backup that can be successfully restored, should I just grab /etc and /home, and to restore signal pre-restore, restore, and then signal post-upgrade?

Alex

Hi Elax,

A short how-to or an explanation about the method you used to install BackupPC on SME would be *very* apreciated.

Sorry, no such luck :). I currently run BackupPC on FC4 <duck>

I'll give it a hack tomorrow. It's not too difficult to install I think

That's cool that you're using backuppc.  I am as well.

If you were asking what data needs to be backed up off of sme FROM backuppc, I think you are correct with /home and /etc and I remember correcottly, sme's backup utility it grabs /ro as well.  Don't know if there's anything to that.

I grabbed /root just to be safe.

I do think however, that samba may mess up links.  There's a chance that restoring etc from backuppc will destroy linked files and dirs.  I've scripted a tarring of the dirs I want that can then be snatched by backuppc.

Let us know if you ever do a restore.
