Greetings! I'm thinking of building an SME7 box around one of these controllers. Based on a couple of threads it seems like this will be workable.

My question is how (if at all) do linux distros deal with drive failures in an array built by the controller (instead of linux sw raid.) When say a drive fails is there any mechanism to monitor/alert? On windows these cheapo devices come with software monitoring.

And on linux (in general) they do not. Do not use them. Use linux software RAID, with plain SATA adaptors.

Thanks Charlie... that's the conclusion I came to myself between when I posted and now.

I'm toying with the idea of one of those NetCell hardware RAID cards. They SEEM to be a combination of true HW and low cost and a Centos kernel patch is available. I don't really see mention of them being used in server environments though.
