Installation configuration problems
« on: March 30, 2006, 08:20:15 PM »
I have just upgraded my SME box hardware to a new AMD 64 system and thought this would be an ideal time to upgrade to SME 7rc1

I must say I'm impressed so far although I have a rather serious issue with domains, email etc that I cannot seem to solve. :-?

My setup with SME 6.5rc1 - running as a Server and Gateway

local IP 192.168.10.1, subnet 255.255.255.0 DHCP 100 - 250
External IP 192.168.1.50

My ISP - Wanadoo (UK) - ADSL - through a broadband router (IP 192.168.1.1)

My web host - US based company hosting my domain and my emails (domainname.co.uk). Email collected through multi-drop from a single pop3 account on the web host

My local SME domain domainname.co.uk. Using this as my local domain meant that emails were sent from username@domainname.co.uk but I could not ftp or view my actual website hosted in the US.

To get around this I changed the 'hostnames and addresses' records for www and ftp as below

Hostname                  www.domainname.co.uk & ftp.domainname.co.uk
Visibility                    Local
location                     Remote
Local IP                    IP address of my hosting company’s server in the US
Global IP                  - NONE -
Ethernet Address       - NONE -

This seemed to work fine. :-)

------------
V7 Install
------------

I tried initially to set up my new v7 install changing the local domain to domainname.local. This works to a point but all my mail was being dumped in the admin account rather than being distributed to the mailboxes of the users.

I setup Pseudonyms for each user so that emails to username@domainname.co.uk would go through. Again this seemed to work ok. I then tried sending mail and kept getting returned as it was being sent from username@domainname.local and not a valid address. This was understandable so I setup a Virtual Domain domainname.co.uk.

In the Hostnames and addresses section I tried to setup the same settings I had used in SME 6.5rc1 but now SME complains that the IP address of my website and mail is not a local address, which it isn't so, ok. Tried global and that didn't work either. Now I'm a bit confused.

I then thought that this was way to complicated compared to my old set up so I started again using the same setup as with SME 6.5. This works perfectly apart from I cannot seem to change the www. and ftp. records to point to my external website.

I'm sure I am missing the big picture somewhere and maybe I exploited a loophole in 6.5 that I shouldn't have done, soooo could someone please help and tell me how to do it properly.

Any ideas would be greatly received.

Many thanks

James

PS. I realise I could setup outlook so that my e-mail address is reported to be username@domainname.co.uk but this doesn't help when I am using webmail.

PPS. I'm I cant be the only one this situation and the user manual seems to only cater for people who are hosting there own domains as well as using SME as a file, print and an email server. Would it be possible for an installation FAQ or additional section in the new manual to cover this?

Thanks again

Please report each of the problems via the bug tracker. It should "just work". If it doesn't, there's bugs to fix, and all bug investigations/fixes are tracked via the bug tracker.

James,

I also ran into that problem with version 7(RC1), they way I fixed it on the webmail side was under the options panel there is one that allows you to modify the sent from address.

I would give more details but I am waiting for the raid to build for my SME on a (you guessed it) Promise Fasttrak100tx2!!!
