Strange problem

I have a server running SME 5.0, which gives 2 PCs access to the internet over Shaw Cable.

The server is:

P2-350
128Mb

And the two clients are:

Win98
Celeron 500
128Mb

Linux (and Win98)
P3-700
256Mb

The strange thing is that the 2nd client seems to have faster access to the internet, while the 1st one seems to get speeds more akin to a dial up account.

Has anyone else seen this before? Or is it purely something to do with my network/computers and not related to SME?

Thanks

Nick Texidor

My 2c...

The speed of the machine and available memory, both are higher than client 1, so this may make a difference to page rendering, giving the impression of faster surfing.

Are all the network cards the same spec?  ie, are they all 10/100?

We have NT, Linux and Mac machines all accessing the Internet via our e-smith box and there isn't a huge noticeable difference on any of them.... they're just all slow!!  :^)   We still have 56k modem dialup access here! :^(

It isn't the rendering speed that causes the apparent slow connection. It really is slower - I can try to load a page on the 1st PC, wait a while, and load the same page on the 2nd, and the 2nd PC loads and displays the page while the 1st one is still waiting to download the page!

Hopefully that made sense.

I think you have a problem with your utp cable... (the slow one) change them and see what happens.

Good point - I'll try that. Thanks.

Also try doing an FTP download on each one.
