Problems with a modem dialing out
« on: January 14, 2002, 06:50:18 PM »
Hi there
I installed SME ver5 and am configuring it. I have two problems and wander if someone can help me:

1. I have existing network with NT domain server, which is the DHCP and has the users set up on it and does the password validation. I do not have web site so I suppose I need to leave that part blank - don't I? Also i do not need to set up the users to the SME again (if they are set up in the NT server already)? Then how the e-mail collection on SME will work - some od the user have hotmail account others freeserve etc.(currently each user had a modem attached to the same tel line.) How tehe e-mail work with SME - do I need to install Exchange server....

2. The modem i attached to the SME server box is external USRobotics Courier vEverything on Comm port 1. USR assured me that yheir modems are compatible with Linux.
Seems that the modem is trying to dial out fron time to time as ectra lights are flashing and i can hear some clicking, but moment after that it stops and nothing happens. Anyone with experience with USR modems?
Do i need to put some AT strings when configuring modem. Any thing I do wrong?

Any ideas, please?
I am not a linux person at all - SME server is the first touch with Linux - please speak understandable English for a Linux novice.
Regards,

Roumen

Services like hotmail are web-based, so the email is not "collected" as such.  Sounds to me like you really don't need the email element of e-smith if you aren't using an ISP that allows ETRN or multi-drop pop3 mail delivery.  Echange server is not going to help. What you're trying to do is to basically use the e-smith as a common gateway for your users to access the internet - after that, they're all going to get their email via a web browser or by pop3 from Freeserve.

Regarding the modem - make sure that you send AT&F1 before trying to dial - this will set hardware flow control.  You also want to ensure that you use tone dialling - clicking indicates that it's using pulse dialling - prefix the number with ATDT to force tone dialling.
