Topic: Kaspersky anti-virus on SME server

Hi all,

i have recently installed SME server 7.0rc1 and i want to incorporate
kaspersky anti-virus with the server,

after installation of the antivirus and integrating it with qmail,
it blocks the mail from going out and coming in,

what could be the issue?

i read somewhere on this site that there are plugins for kav,
but i didnt seem to find any where they were specified to be,

what can i do to have kav on my server and mails going out too?

What does Kaspersky do that clamav does not?

Not to put down clamav, I use it myself. But Kaspersky is probably one of the best AV's out there. It's detection rate is far higher than the others. So, that may be why.

not to say that Kasperski is bad - it gobs really much of the cpu (up to the making the system unuseable). If you happen to make it work - can you please let us know how much the cpu usage has changed (sme7admin or any other long time monitoring util) - before and after also coupled with how many (~)  emails are processed.
In a way I do like the new clamav arrangement much better - refusing infected mail at reception - willl kasperski do the same?

That was more the case for the 5.0 version. Apparently, the newer version doesn't suffer from that.

The website you recommended mentions that Norton AV (Symantec) is one of the better antiviruses out there. At least according to the little rating system they have going on.

I build and service computers, networks, etc. for several businesses in my city. I used Norton for many years, and many of my customers had it installed on their workstations. (windows based)

And I have to say, based on my actual experience of Norton, it's possibly the worst AV on the market.

It's easily defeated, doesn’t see or cant remove many common trojans, and can hog resources, including cpu time.

AVG Free, on the other hand, just works. And catches anything trying to infect me. Without killing performance.

I wouldn’t place a lot of faith in anything they have to say about comparisons. I think testing and actually using a product are very different things...

I completely agree on Norton, it is a piece of crap. I also owned (just sold it) a computer/network store and we got computers in all the time that had the latest version of NAV and were completely hosed with viruses.

I haven't done much with the latest version of Norton, but several people have told me it works much better. I have my doubts.....

The different AV review sites in the past had Norton listed pretty far down the list. And showed its effectiveness at 85%. Which was right on target.

We also used AVG, but had several people get viruses with it as well. For customer drive scanning I wanted a really "tough" scanner, and Kaspersky really got it done.
