Hi All,

I set up a 7.0 pre2 box as a Domain controler Domain Accounts.

I then had to reinstall the box and switched on domain controller without changing any original settings, I think the workgroup was mitel-networks.

I have since changed the workgroup to accounts and added Accounts as avirtual domain, stoped and started the domain controller.

None for the computers can now see the domain controller. Can any body give me a clue.

If I try to logon I am tlod that tha domain controller is unvailble or not recognising the account. (even though these are the same as before.

If I turn then domain controller off I am told that the domain acconts does not exist.

By switching the domain controller on wiht the wrong details in the first place have I created a file with the wrong names in. If so where is it so that I can edit it.

When you reinstalled SME you should have restored a backup from the SME server you had to take out of service, looks like you did a clean install, so the domain controller your clients are trying to connect to doesn't exist anymore.   (I know your new server has the same name, but not the same security identifiers, so to a Windows client it is a different domain controller)

If you don't have too many clients the easiest route is:

logon to each Windows client, remove it from old domain and then join to the new domain.  This may cause other problems, for example with data.

If you have lots of clients I would try restoring a backup during the SME install.

The joys of running Windows domains!

Dave

You will probably have to join workgroup "xyz" and maybe reboot each client before you can join the new domain :(

Thanks Dave,

I was beginnning to suspect that the problem may have been something to do with that.

My biggest next problem is that the XP pro clients do not have a known adminstrator password so that I can reset everything.

Down to password removers. We are only talking 4 clients and two of those ar win98.

If you log on locally rather than on the domain does the domain admin passwd not work?  I've found machines where although the windows domain isn't available I can logon locally with the domain admin passwd. On occasions that the local administrator passwd has been left blank :(  but good in this situation.  However if you built the XP machines you will know what passwd you set :(

The Win98 machines has so little security they shouldn't be a problem

Goodluck
