A backing up contrib (backuppc) needs a special item (File::RsyncP)
that in turn needs 'gcc' (what that is) to make it happen...

...does SME7 have this 'gcc' hidden or something?
Alternatively how do I put 'gcc' into SME7?

GCC is a compiler have a look at http://gcc.gnu.org/

A compiler shouldn't be needed on a production server.

Does the contributor of the backuppc contribution specifically say what the requirements are to get backuppc working?  I would be surprised if GCC was needed to use the contrib.

Agreed, have not adopted that route, probability of success (for me) is low.

A gcc compiler is not specifically needed to 'install' the backuppc contrib.

Whereas appropriate compiling is specified (says the contrib's notes) to
extend the desirable capabilities of the backuppc contrib with the install
of a particular perl component for rsyncd and similarly for a desirable
patch (.diff) file. And so it goes on.

In the contribs forum cactus made a suggestion which, when I followed
it up, resulted in another's rpm installing File::RsyncP. I have now been
able to configure backuppc sufficiently to run a designated rsyncd task.

I feel that the backuppc contrib's author has a target audience with
Linux skills more advanced than mine but I make (no pun intended)
slow progress;~)
