Install CD Problem
« on: June 12, 2006, 09:14:14 AM »
Hello from New Zealand,

Apologies in advance if this is a common question - or just an ignorant one - I've searched the fora and entered the chat area several times but have no luck finding an answer.

 Three questions:

Q1. Is the SME Server 7 iso file (450+ megs) bootable?

Q2. If no, how may I make it so, or can you please post a link to an iso (preferably and English ver)?

Q3. What is the WWBMU file that I see when accessing the DR DOS dir after loading CD? It is bringing up, what looks like an install screen for SME, but in German or Dutch. I downloaded the isos from the USA, Australia, and local NZ mirror. At first I thought I may have mistakenly chosen the mirror in the Netherlands, but not so.

Thank you in advance for any replies. I will check tomorrow for answers and reply.

This software looks awesome - a great combo of many things I need!

I hope to contribute to this community in the future.

 Regards,

   nzer

Nzer,

Q1 - Yes

Q2 - Make sure that the MD5sum is correct. Make sure that you burn the CD as an .iso not burn the .iso file to the CD. see http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/How%20to%20download

Q3 - There is no WWBMU file in the .iso and as far as I am aware there is no local NZ mirror for the smeserver iso. If there is I would love to know where it is.

I had a miserable time downloading V7 at work , wasted days
Tried at home, worked first time! No idea why

So then I studied how to do it with rsync onto an old server at work, copied the iso to my burner machine.  rsync is way faster and seems to solve the errors

you may also be able to use the corrupt cd with rsync if you don't have a good copy of a beta 7 , worth a try anyway

This will give you some pointers to get the iso using rsync:

Thanks Jon, Mike, and dsemuk for you help!

We eventually got boot and an install.

The WWBMU file I referred to was either part of a pre-install checker using DR DOS - or it was just resident in RAM on the box we were using from a prior installation of something else.

Of course, this isn't the first time I've used an .iso - it looks like I had the same issue as Mike.

Thanks for the rsync suggestion and link - a great help!

Jon, you can find the NZ mirror care of CityLink in Wellington, hosted off WIX I assume. I imagine, they have something similar in Auckland via APE. The Welly link is for 6.0.1, but here it is:

ftp://ftp.citylink.co.nz/../iso/SME_Server_6.0.1

We are developing something neat for a public user drupal environment and hoping SME will be a great base.

So far drupal is up but getting phpMyAdmin going on another ibay seems to be breaking the install on reboot, which makes me wonder if we should use SME for PDC/Domain service only, and keep the LAMP stuff abstracted on a seperate server.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help. I hope to chip in with some help in the future!
