Slow Printing

I replaced our Novell Branch Office server with SME server 7 at one of our satellite offices for 8 users. I was very impressed with how easy it was to install. It even worked with the Promise TX2000 controller and 2 mirrored hard drives. Very nice. I have it in server mode only, and file sharing is working fine. The only issue I have is with printing, and it suprises me because the server doesn't really do much here except pass the jobs on to the printer.
I have a printer connected to the network via TCP/IP on a dedicated print server. From the first time we tried printing it would take ages to come out. Programs that would generate reports on the workstations would take about 5 times longer to generate those reports. I tried all sorts of settings on the workstations but nothing would improve it so I ended up connecting the printer to another XP workstation and sharing it from there. This works fine but why does passing the jobs through the SME server slow it down so much?
The box is a P4 2.26 with 512mb ram and the problem occurs when no other users are on so I doubt it is the hardware being over taxed.

Any advice would be appreciated.
