Mobile phone email problem
« on: June 17, 2006, 06:37:45 PM »
Using v7.0rc2, my mobile telephone is set up to get POP3s via port 995 , (my router/firewall passes port 995 to 995), and send SMTP to port 25.

Sending an email from the mobile to the server mailbox works.
Retrieving email on the mobile from the server seems to start OK; "Connecting", "Retrieving mail". But then, after about a minute, results in an error message on the mobile:- "Error with email server.. Timed out".

I set up another profile to access a mailbox on a different v5.6 server using POP3/SMTP ports 110/25 and this works fine.

Is there some other setup on the v7.0rc version that I have missed?

I have a feeling that although the mobile telephone does not report or request it, it is stalling due to a security certificate issue.

Help appreciated.
Thanks,

Alex

Hello

The SME7 only allows secure connections from the "outside" network aka. Internet.

If you mail using SMTP to anyone else, whose Mail-account isn't on your server, it won't work either.

Most Handphones DO have an issue with SSL...

SME6 still allows for external connections to IMAP / SMTP / POP3 without SSL.
SMTP Auth is available as a contrib for SME6.

Regards
Andy

Hi,
Thanks for the reply Andy. I was not quite sure what you meant in your second line:

My email account is on my server as that is what I am trying to access via my mobile phone when not in the office.

Do you know of anywhere that the issues with SSL on mobile phones is discussed? The mobile phone inquestion is a brand-new Samsung P300.

I notice that during SME startup both POP3s and POP3 are started. Is it possible to use POP3 for mobile phone email access?

Cheers,
Alex

Hi alext

Your SME Servers will accept mail for those domains set in "domains" under server-manager.

If a reciepient has a mail account on that server, anyone can mail to that account.

But otherwise, using your handphone, you won't get an IP address in the "local networks" range. That means, you need smtp-auth (SME7 handles this).

But SSL is sometimes a problem and can be deactivated.

There is a "hidden" mention of how to do this in the Bugtracker section...
That enables the server to use POP3, IMAP and SMTP also from outside your local network.

Security wise that's not great, your password's in the clear...

YMMV
