Topic: Setup SME Server to allow one user to view all others mail?

HI there,

I have a client who has a requirement that the administrator be able to access other staff members emails at any time. The reason being that staff go on leave and emails remain unaswered, they have a very low level of skill often claiming email clients dont work when they do or say no emails where received when they were. (Maybe it just a culture thing but its not my place to say.)

They are currently using webmin to view other user email boxes. They also want to be able to prevent users from deleting emails.  Can I do this with SME server?

I reckon I should be able to edit the courier setting to prevent deletion but is there a place in the SME console where the admin user can access the emails?

Why don't you load on the "Vacation Message" contrib .... http://www.dungog.net/sme/usermanager.php

That way the Admin or even the user with the "e-smith-userpanel" can redirect and even send back an e-mail to the sender stating that they are away etc.

We use this at work and is very handy when ppl go on holidays or even leave.

The other thing if the Admin wants to view all the other ppl's mail well I guess the best way is to have an IMAP system and setup all users in a different e-mail client and view it that way ... not sure why you would ever want to go that far though.

The administrator can gain access to users' mailboxes at any time by changing the password.

Courier is not used in SME server.

Where can I find out what imap server and other server that SME server uses? Is Cyrus used for the imap server?

Also changing passwords will not be the preferred way as this will mean having to reconfigure user mail clients all the time. The administrator, who is not very technical, justs wants one console where they can click on users and view their mail box as with webmin.

The vacation setting is good but these guys are so low level they will probably get it wrong so its all about making the administrators live easier.
