"page cannot be displayed" error when restore from
« on: June 26, 2006, 03:50:53 AM »
Did a clean install to SME7RC2 and attempt to restore from desktop. I get a "page cannot be displayed" error using GUI interface in IE on both XP and win2k machines. I also tried this using Mozilla Firefox and got no error but when I choose the file and hit restore, nothing happens.

I have tried turning off everything I can think of that may be interfering but no joy. Any help would be appreciated.

What is the size of your backup file ?
Did you Verify the backup file after the backup was done ?
What version of sme was the backup file created on ?

Hi Ray, thanks for the reply.

> What is the size of your backup file ?
2.7GB

No but I will today. Not sure if this is the issue though as it doesn't even appear to look at the file before going to "page cannot be displayed"

> What version of sme was the backup file created on?
SME5.6. I'm following the upgrade methodology talked about on page 2 of the "Upgrading vs new install + restore" topic in this forum.

As I understand it that will be a problem, in addition to your reported browser error problem. You may well have more than one issue going on here.
Restore from files larger than 2Gb does not work correctly. See the backup2 contrib for a workaround.
The file may also be truncated, that's why it's important to Verify your backup.

Thanks for that, Ray. I have looked at the backup2 contrib (which looks great and I will probably use it in future) but it doesn't mention SME5.6 which is what I am trying to migrate from.

I have upgraded the old server from SME5.5 to 5.6 and backed it up ready to restore to new OS (SME7.0RC2) and hardware. Are you able to suggest a better way to get there as the 2.7GB size appears to be a show stopper.

I thought of just adding the new server into the domain, re-creating iBays, groups and accounts and copying everything across. This would not be too terrible as it's a small organisation (<15 users) but I am not sure how to go about migrating the email...

Any helpful hints gratefully accepted :-)

It didn't exist then. The easiset approach would be to upgrade your server to sme6.0 and then install the backup2 contrib from dmay contrib area.
Make a 911 backup using it, install backup 2 on sme7 (use the correct version) and then restore from that 911 backup job.

Come to think of it, if you have upgraded to sme 6 then you can use the restore from disk tool, that is in sme7 now.
You can restore from a mounted hard drive with the old OS on it, no need to go through the backup stage.
I seem to recall that it will restore from a sme5.6 install. but I would check that to be sure.
