SME NEEDS Groupware.
I keep loosing sme clients because they ask me to migrate them to windows small business server and the to share is only getting more and more important. We have got to be able to share almost everything not just files and printers.

Bela.

Have you already tried the suggestions on the board such as open-exchange?

And if that does is not to your liking you might offer a bounty/donation to get the package you would prefer to run on SME server.

well that first sentence didn't make much sence did it?
I would not mind paying developers for add on contribs that work and will be around for a while.
The two clients I'm converting/migrating are going to spend money on MS software. I don't see why not pay that money to a developer.

I think you have a great idea. Ask around, there are people who will develop what you are looking for. Of course, your posts doesn't give much detail about what you need.

Since this is a SUGGESTIONS forum, my first reaction is to tell you to: INSTALL GROUPWARE. There are many packages already available.

I've successfully installed
    * achievo (
http://www.achievo.org/)
* egroupware (http://www.egroupware.org)
* tikiwiki (http://tikiwiki.org)
* xoops (http://www.xoops.org/)[/list]
on SME 7.

None of these seem like the perfect fit for any of my particular problems, however...

I've seen discussions of horde and openxchange on SME in Contribs, but I know very little about horde's capabilities, and openxchange looks complicated to setup...

Is there anyone who uses any groupware? Not a web based one but something that uses a software client.
The features that Exchange, GroupWise or the Domino servers are stuffed with are overkill for a small business user, but sharing calendars, or contacts or even tasks is something that get requested a lot.
Having a groupware in my opinion is a must and it would make SME a very competitive product.

I installed and got working OpenXchange only to find that they stopped selling the Outlook connector in single or small batches...
You can now only buy outlook connectors in blocks of 25, which costs several hundred £’s.

Your best bet is going to be Horde 3.1 which will be outlook syncable.
It will use an opensource outlook connector, and the SME Developers said that they would be working on an upgrade after 7 went final, so we should hopefully hear something soon.

I agree with you that SME needs a decent groupware option.  Unfortunately Outlook is ubiquitous, and once a luser gets used to it there is no way you are going to pry it away from them.
Outlooks implementation of IMAP is terrible, so you can't even realistically use it as an email client with SME.

I eagerly await the horde upgrade!

AFAIK, I am the only one that has stated he would take a look at Horde 3.1, which I will after I am finished working on trying to get some additional changes to some of the core horde rpms to support some of the other groupware addons that I have been working on for SME 7.0

As I have stated in another post, I haven't looked with any detail at any of the horde 3.1 modules to date.

Has anybody installed these contribs?

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=31018.0

They work great for me, share calendar, notes, tasks, bookmarks, address book.
I believe it does most everything that you guys need here.

I'd suggest that you contact the Development Manager and see what he can offer you.

I would start with writing a new feature request bug report on the Bug Tracker.  There is already a bug report requesting an upgrade to Horde 3.1, and I think one regarding adding some other Horde modules.  Have a look in the "SME Server Future" category.  We are discussing the logistics of a bounty system, and likely it will be tied closely with the bug tracker.

Gordon Rowell is the Development Project manager.  He will likely see your bug repost, or his emial address is in his profile: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?action=profile;u=170

OK, so I will chime in on this.  I believe I am almost to a point where I can release for testing the various horde 3.1.x RPM's.  Need to solve a couple of issues first.  Those being the creation of the various indexes.  Noticed with the turba, then looked at the horde install, that the indexes weren't being created because the particular files being tested against were already present.  So, I plan on creating another mysql.init event to create the horde indexes and simply creating a filler file for turba that gets created after the indexes are created the first time then testing for that file.  The mysql.init event for horde because there is a new table introduced that I can test against, but for turba there are no new tables. There may be a better and more efficient way to do this and that can be re-addressed later.  I'll make the announcement in the contribs forum.  If I remember, I'll try to post a link in this thread.
