V5 problems with mail client password
« on: January 28, 2002, 04:25:55 AM »
I am having problems with V5 not recognizing email clients passwords even though everything is setup correctly.  I get a message asking for the password when it is already correct.  This happens 80% of the time and then it will work fine the other 20%.  When I look at utilization it is about 97% idle so there is no overloading problem.  I have both update 2 &3, 300mhz amd k6-2 w 160Mb mem.  I use MS outlook express for the email clients.  Only about 4 users.   It seems to work for a while (mainly when I am trying to troubleshoot) then clients start seeing the password requests and it wont log in.  I also had a wierd problem with 1 client where I could not get it to allow login at all until I completely removed the service from outlook express and reentered it again with the same info.  it then started working but after a while it reverted to not logging in again.  Is anybody else having trouble with this?

We LOVE Outlook Express!  It supports several of my staff with constant desktop support calls.  Since we charge for those calls, we LOVE it.

Now, to answer your question.  Yes, I have seen this issue but not only with SME but with other POP servers.  It is clearly a desktop client issue.  Our std response (that only works sometimes) is to uninstall/reinstall Outlook when it hoses up like this.

One other question, do you have all the service packs applied to the OS?

Jeff,

Thanks for the reply.  I considered reloading outlook express on the 1 client causing the most trouble but havent yet.  I also found out about another problem with a eudora pro client.  it wont send outgoing mail thru the sme.  I am useing the sme as an internal mail server only.  It isnt getting my mail from my ISP, it is only handling internal mail but I have to have the clients send outgoing mail thru the SME for it to be able to intercept the internal stuff.  This seems to be a separate problem since there is no login involved.  I wonder if there is some instability caused by not having it configured to retrieve mail at all.  Maybe it is related.  Also, if you meant the e-smith updates, I have installed both 2 and 3.  I dont know if there is separate updates for Outlook express.  Thanks.

Gregg,

I actually meant the MS updates.  We have had *some* of our issues resolved by making sure all MS service packs were applied.

The other thing that would be handy is a copy of the error message that you get.  Is it possible that the ISP server is rejecting your mail as a relay issue?

Jeff,

On the login problem, I just get the standard message that asks for the password for the mail server.  The password is already filled in and retyping it does no good, it just comes back as though it didnt recognize the password.  It only does this about 80% o f the time so it seems the info is correct or it would never work.  I now have the problem on outlook express, outlook, and eudora pro clients.  I dont have the message yet the eudora client was getting when trying to send outgoing mail because I havent had a chance to reconfigure it to try to send thru the SME box again.  I'm beginning to think I need to wipe out the server and start again, maybe on different hardware.  Thanks for your input.
