It might be easier if you told us what you did to stop the database starting.

Something caused the database to stop/crash. Tell us all the things you did do as one of them may have caused the problem.

> ....service mysqld start

You are strongly advised not to use the service command on sme server, it is deprecated & unreliable in many circumstances. Search here for alternatives

> ...when i go to webmail it tells me it has encountered a fatal error.

Saying that you get an error tells us very little. If you quote the complete error you are receiving it will tell us a lot more.

Have you looked in /var/log/messages log file to see if there are any clues ?

You could try selecting Reconfigure and then do a Reboot.
See the Reboot/Reconfigure/Shutdown menu.

This is your reason why you cannot connect to the DB and futher down it's the reason why you have to sock error's.

Try doing what Ray say's, if that doesn't work please open a Bug Report and give us a full history of what occured on this server.

Thanks!

You still didn't say what you DID do though.
The Reconfigure option does
signal-event post-upgrade
reboot
which will expand templates & read database settings & recreate config files etc
Obviously you changed something, and that change did not get correctly implemented by the system, therefore causing problems.

See the Lazy Admin Tools (lat) contrib, although I'm not sure if a version compatible with sme7 has been released yet.

A warning to others though.

On careful review the old sme6-mblotwijk-version filename is
e-smith-lazy_admin_tools-0.9.0-1.noarch.rpm

and the new sme7-jbennett-version filename is
e-smith-lazy_admin_tools-0_9_1-0_noarch.rpm
