AIC-7902 Supported?
« on: August 06, 2006, 07:06:22 AM »
I am new to SME as of yesterday. I tried a test install on a spare machine and loved it. Today I tried to install 7.0 on the main server with onboard U320 aic7902. It hangs on the first screen during installation of the aic7902 driver.

There doesnt seem to be much regarding 7.0 and addressing this problem in this forum, so if I missed it somewhere, please show me the link.

This is a supermicro board and I would think these 7902's are supported??

A search on aic7902 in the Search Site window at top right of this screen found an answer that is not quite what you want but it might point you in the right direction.

Re hardware compatibility generally, if it is supported by Centos 4.3, then it should run on sme7.

After the aic7902 not working, I figured I'd try to load Centos 4.2 to check driver support and see what happened. (I had 4.2 on a dvd and am downloading the 4.3 dvd now)

So I changed out the cdrom drive in the server and hooked up a dvd drive to try the Centos. It then started up fine with the install. I cancelled it before it installed.

So for s***s and giggles, I put the sme 7.0 cd in and rebooted. The problem WENT AWAY. SME installed fine and did not hang on the aic79xx driver screen.

Quite weird. The cdrom is a liteon in fine working condition and the dvdrom is also a liteon combo drive.

:O ??

So the second time when sme loaded successfully, you used a dvd drive instead of a cd drive ?
For fun & giggles you could try installing sme7 again using the original cd drive to see if it still loads OK or not.

Not sme related..

I hate liteons. IMO the made poor drives. Either that or I had very bad luck. :D
