I am considering trying to install this on SME.  A friend of mine is using it on his servers for version control, seems to work great for him.  Anyone have any experience with this or know of a better solution.

I think you are better of using a tool that is used for version control. I wrote a contrib to integrate Subversion into SME Server 7, you might want to consider this. Or in case of documents you could use some sort of document management system like KnowledgeTree. Both should run on a SME Server.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.
