Asterisk stand-alone vs Asterisk under SME vs Asterisk@home
« on: August 20, 2006, 05:48:32 PM »
I am considering setting up an Asterisk server in my home office.

Could those of you familiar with the system please tell me what the pros/cons are of the three options:

-  Asterisk stand-alone (under Centos)
-  Asterisk as part of my main SME7 server
-  the asterisk@home stand-alone version

Is there another option I missed?

Thanks for your help.

I myself have no idea what the pros or cons are ... but I have asterisk incorporated in with SME7 ... have had for over 6 months now and all runs nice.

That’s al I use now to receive as well as make calls with.

The providers I am with eg: ADSL as well as Voip ... seem to be a good combo as I get no echo at all.

So unless there are possible security issues that it could cause I can recommend the incorporation of Asterisk into SME7 if you have a small network ... SME7 on its own is just idling ... not doing much at all so adding a few more functions will not over load it at all.

If you have a larger network and your server is doing a lot of crunching eg: spam and virus etc you may not want to load it up with more things to do.

Regards,

Tib

Thanks, Tib.

My SME Server gets relatively low volumes of email traffic. But it holds about 50GB of data (and growing). I use Darrell's backup2 for system backup. When it is running (several hours at a time) there is quite intensive cpu usage as it tries to compress to rar.

Based on your knowledge of Asterisk, what would be the impact on call quality during these periods?

That I will have to try out ... usually ppl do backups at something like 1am in the morning ... thats when we do our backups at work anyway as well as myself here at home.

But just for curiosity I will try that out and let you know.
