Email - general information required

I want to understand a lot more about email than the manual provides. At the moment I don't use it because I don't know enough about it. Can anyone point me to some more comprehensive info than the manual provides about what it is doing, how it works, how to set it up and how to connect email clients such as Outlook?

Thanks
David

It is a standard POP3, SMTP, IMAP server.
If you understand how these work, you understand the e-smith mail server.

As for Outlook, should work no prob.
set up outlook for Internet email (not corporate or workgroup) and point it to your e-smith server (by name or IP)

David,

What the heck are you doing on this board.  I couldn't believe it when I saw your name.  What a small world.  Good to see you're going for a Linux server, and a good one at that.  I've been researching these Linux GPL server distributions for a while now as I'm trying to set up a small LAN with a server which can also provide a secure Internet gateway for the LAN and a DMZ where I can host a small family web site (for all those baby pics).  Unfortunately, I'm not planning on setting up a mail server at the moment, but will when I upgrade my server hardware.  The hardware I'm using now is only enough for a category 1 server.  However, I have a friend Larry who has set up a mail server and has been using it for quite some time.  I believe he's still using the previous server version.  He may be able to give you some quick pointers and he may even answer your post on this board as he is an avid user.  In any event, I'll forward your inquiry to him at his e-mail address.

Good luck with your setup.  I just loaded SME server V5 and just about to configure everything.  You'll probably see some posts from me soon, in addition to the one I made few days ago.  I may have used my office e-mail address on that post.

David,

Have you been able to read up on mail servers.  I think Steve was right on point.  I think to start, you need an overview of how a standard POP3, SMTP, and IMAP mail-servers work.  Beyond that, most of the how-to guides out there such as on www.linuxdoc.org are for experienced users configuring Linux from the root prompt (command line) and deal with Linux generically or with a variety of distributions and applications (I have not seen SME). However, the SME server-manager should be fairly intuitive for configuring the e-mail server and can be accessed through your web browser on a client PC at www.yourdomain.xxx/server-manager where "yourdomain.xxx" is whatever primary domain name you used on the install.  You can check this at the server on the server console (option 3).  As far as Outlook goes, the sites cited by Quade should help.

If you have a specific point your stuck at, let me know as much about where you're at and I'll see if Larry can help.  I would also post the question on the general discussion board.
