The command line version is free, the server panel add on is at cost.

Hi All,

The dungog panel is a paid for addon from their site:
Quote
smeserver-dansguardian
SME 7.x
yum install dansguardian smeserver-dansguardian

Provides all the SME intergration to get dansguardian running, you will need to hand edit the configuration files in /etc/dansguardian to suit. Alternatively you can purchase dungog-dansguardian

For more information go to: http://dungog.net/sme/dansguardian.php

Del

This is off topic but ...

How can you say that?  SME Server is free and I can think of a few servers that do the same thing that you pay thousands for.

I am new to SAIL SME Server v8b6 and have been using SME for many years.
I have already done some research and only ask questions if I still can't work it out.

But remember Stephen (Dungog) has spent his own time creating his contrib so rather than create a GPL contrib he decides to offer his contrib for a very reasonable fee.

Most of Stephen's (Dungog) contribs are GPL for the SME Server and he has updated to his contribs to V7.0

And nothing is stopping someone else from doing the same.  I would if I had the know-how and time.  But I am still learning SME and Linux, so for me to do that will be some time away yet

Good Evening,

It will never be free unless someone with the know-how will step up to the plate. Money has been offered to do just such a thing with no takers or no one wanted to say, yes I'll do it for $50, $100, $1,000.

My posts are not intended in anyway to be any reflection upon Dungog's work. Stephen is a very professional person and has been most helpful in everyway when I needed any type of support for his contribs. I have been very satisfied with his product.

On the flipside though I believe that it way too ironic that in a lot of other distro's that use or have anything to do with Dansguardian, the solutions are usually free. Still trying to figure out why no one has spent any amount of time to produce a comparable, easily configurable via GUI, type of product for SME. Mr. Mitchell has provided help in the past and I wonder if it influenced Stephen to release the GPL version of his contrib that does not have a server manager panel.

I love SME and the community that surrounds it. I have told many people about it and everyone that has actually tried it has jumped right in with great enthusiasm. Even with all the positive talk though, there will never be a free, web panel configurable, version of Dansguardian for SME.

Maybe no one wants to build another control panel for Dansguardian as one is already available.

Maybe people with the necessary development skills don't want to take food away from Stephen.

Or it may be that after due consideration, they have decided that maintaining and supporting this (and other) contrib years in and years out to the high level delivered by Dungog for what is after all a modest fee is just in the too hard basket...

If it does not work out of the box, please fill in a Bug Report @ Bugzilla (http://bugs.contribs.org)  - check: http://wiki.contribs.org/Bugzilla_Help .  Thanks.

This small fee Dungog charges gets you not only the Dansguardian panel but several other useful panels (for me anyways). And the support he provides is unbeateable.
Dungog's panel inter-operate with the groups created by SME. Something that someone that had worked on Endian Firewall (what a crap product...) would have a hard time accomplishing.
So my point is: If a panel comes out for free (don't ever say never wallyrp) it would be great. For now I rather still be a Dungog's customer for the contribs and the support he provides.

Just Curious as to why you dont like Endian Firewall?  I run have run sme at work since 6.5 and love it, but have recently put endian at home to test it out and it seems like a good firewall/antivirus/antispam/content filtering program.  In fact, with my limited experience of content filtering setups it has a great control panel to set it up and maintain it.  I would love to see something like that in place for sme.

Because it's based on two other Open Source projects (so I recommend them instead), and like you I too was very interested and signed for the mailing lists. If you signed up for the lists you'll know what I'm talking about:
In many occasions the answers to users is to buy the commercial product.
