Installing SME server 7 ->Disc error 32, AX = 42FD, Drive
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:59:22 PM »
I have a problem trying to install SME server 7.

I will get the message ISOLINUX: Disc error 32, AX = 42FD, Drive 9F all the
time.

I am installing on a Pentium III and pressing the <SHIFT> won't work.

The MD5SUM was correct and I burned the image with Nero 6 and verified the data.

When I mount the image on my windows pc I can browse through the files.

I want to know if there is a possibility to start the installation from a floppy as I was able to do with SME server 6.

Can anyone help me with this.

So that rules out download errors, although you might like to try installing to a different computer using the same CD to really prove for sure that the CD is OK. If Windows is reading it OK, then it probably is OK.

This is more likely to be your problem. You simply MUST install with the "smei586" switch, and the only way  to do that is to start up to the boot menu.

Changelog: 7.0rc1 -> 7.0rc2
- Installer built with i686 kernel. In order to install on i586 machines you will need to do the following:
1) Press shift while booting to get the boot menu.
2) Type "smei586" at the boot prompt.

The time you want to press the SHIFT key is NOT when the computer is booting. It IS when the CD is booting. You will see a message on the screen something like "booting from CD drive xyz", that's when you need to press and hold down the Shift key. Keep holding it down for a few seconds until you see the boot prompt screen appear, where you can type the required command.

You may miss pressing (& holding down) the Shift key on the first attempt or two, but watch carefully for the "booting from CD message", and you will know when to press & hold Shift on the next reboot attempt.

If your CD starts installing the normal way and you get the error, then you have missed the time when to press the Shift key, so try again (another reboot).

You MUST do it this way, it's the only way you will have success. You cannot gloss over the process & say the Shift key didn't work, you have to get it to work by doing it at the right time.

Well I solved the problem.

First I replaced the cd-rom (a samsung) with a Lite On burner and tried the install CD again.
This failed but I noticed some progress so I burned a new CD and this worked fine.

The <SHIFT> procedure was not needed, but I still was not able to use it.

Anyway, thanks for the responce.

I'm interested in your outcome

So your problem was a faulty burnt CD then, is that what you mean ?

You mean you were able to install OK from the CD, but in relation to the boot menu you were not able to work out when to press the SHIFT key ie you were not able to start up to the boot menu command prompt ?

I'm puzzled as to why not ?

Yes but also some incompatibility of the Samsung CD-Rom

Actually with the latest cd and the Lite On burner I did not test the <SHIFT> procedure. I will try it again this weekend and let you know.

But anyway as I understand wenn installingon a Pentium 3 I have to use the "smei586" option. I did not use this and the server installed perfect and is working ok.

A PIII is a i686 processor & does not need the switch. Your earlier statement misled me & I just continued "blindly" on to answer your question re how & when to press SHIFT as I thought you wanted to use that switch.
