"Local Networks" Question
« on: August 29, 2006, 11:39:41 PM »
Using SME 6.0.1....

My local network IP is 192.168.0.0 (255.255.255.000) with my server being 192.168.0.1.

DHCP offers IPs to all local machines on the local LAN.

I have been given a device with a fixed IP which I don't wish to alter. The IP is 192.168.1.2 with a mask of 255.255.255.000.

Nevertheless, I want to be able to telnet to this device from any device on the 192.16.0.0 network and I don't want to change the IP of the in-house network!

I'd like to try out the "Local Networks" feature... If I add a new Local Network of 192.168.1.2 with a mask of 255.255.255.000, do I set the router IP to be 192.168.0.1? Is that how its supposed to work or do I need an external router to map between the two networks?

Its unclear in the docs how that config parameter works.

Can some one clarify hwo this is configured please?

You're out of luck. IP networks don't work that way. You either have two networks, with different IP network addresses, separated by a router, or you renumber devices so that they are on the same network.

I'd suggest you read up on IP networking basics.

separated by a router

is what I wanted to know.

I personally think SME Server Local Networks page is unclear and ought to say "You will need a router to the other network".

It could easily be assumed by newcomers that SME will act as the router to route to the other network WITHOUT a secondary IP router.

I know you guys are au fait with IP networking but the whole premise of SME Server is that you don't need an IT specialist to set it up. Clearly, if using additional Local Networks, you do. I undertand the basics of IP Networking but the ambiguity or lack of clear explanation on the page lead to the question.
