Zip files not extracting on iBay
« on: February 06, 2002, 01:53:16 AM »
I'm having a really weird problem with archives saved on an iBay. Other files seem to work, but zip files either decompress funny or don't decompress at all.

Here's an example:

I downloaded printer drivers from www.brother.com to F: which is mapped to the e-smith server.  The drivers come in the form of self-extracting archives. When I run the self-extracting archive from the network drive, I end up with a bunch of files that won't run. If I copy the self-extracting archive to a local drive and run it, the files that are decompressed run just fine.  Any idea what's going on here?

Can someone else try this and see if they get a different result?  The file that I've been experimenting with is:

http://www.brother.com/pub/printer2600/260bradmieng.exe

Thanks!

Where are the files trying to extract to? Quite often self extracting files assume a generic windows setup and will attempt to either add files to the c:\temp or similar or may even be trying to create their own folder in the root of the c: drive. This may have something to do with your problem

It's not that they don't unzip, it's that they unzip but that the files are corrupted. I think if a temp dir. were missing, that it would just not work. This problem is a bit more severe, since it appears to work.

Has no one else run into this before? Has anyone successfully unzipped WinZip or PKZip archives that are stored on the server to a folder on the server?

Thanks!

Just did so.

I brought a floppy disk back to my office from a clients premises this morning which has two zip files created with Winzip 7.0. They are the entire contents of the /var/log directory from his 4.1.2 server at two points in the investigation of a problem. I copied them both into the data ibay on my own server [5.12] and unzipped them to a new folder in the same ibay. I must have done this a hundred times. It always works.

Weird. Perhaps there's something with this particular machine, then. Oddly enough, all other files work just fine ... people open Word and Access files frequently. It's only with Zip files that we have problems.
