What is the opposite of Multi-homing?
« on: September 29, 2006, 04:03:25 PM »
The SME Server can take two 'same' Ethernet (NIC) adapters and assign the same IP address to them.  This is the opposite of multi-homing where one card has two or more addresses.

What's this called?

Sorry to ask a stupid question     But if you do not know the proper terminology, you cannot find the answers you need online.

I appreciate it.  Thanks.

I think you're referring to "transparent mode" firewalls, but SME doesn't do this.

Sonicwall & Watchguard, for example, both have a "transparent" mode, where you don't reconfigure any network devices but just drop the firewall between the network and the existing router - the internal interface assumes the IP of the router so that workstations don't need to be reconfigured, and then automagically configures itself to allow communications with the existing gateway.

"bridged" or "bridging" firewalls may be the same thing.

That's not it.

If you have two nics and want to make them the same address (bind them together) you can give them the same address and place them on the same logical network.

Presumeably, you would have a third nic for the outside interface.

Aaaaaaah!

How about "nic bonding" or "nic teaming"?
