SME 7.0 as a mail relay ton internal server : bounce bounced
« on: October 04, 2006, 02:21:27 PM »
Hi all SME users!
I have set a SME 7.0 as a server and gateway for SMTP relaying to and from an internal SMTP server and for web hosting. There is no user set on the SME box. Everything is working well but when the internal server is rejecting an incoming mail (for any normal reason like no recipient or virus detection or SPAM and filter rules, the internal server is sending back the mail to the SME server which is trying to sending back to the remote user which is often an unknown recipient and/or domain. Up to there it is normal, but this is flooding the admin account on SME! So I would like to know if we can create a rule or do something to avoid this flooding without loosing the other alarms.

This is one sample of the thousand mail arriving on the admin account each day:
-------------------------------------------------------
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at MY-DOMAIN.
I tried to deliver a bounce message to this address, but the bounce bounced!

<claudiozgpo@mr-group.com>:
80.67.18.47 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 554 Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1) Giving up on 80.67.18.47.

--- Below this line is the original bounce.

Return-Path: <>
Received: (qmail 11986 invoked for bounce); 4 Oct 2006 08:10:54 -0000
Date: 4 Oct 2006 08:10:54 -0000
From: MAILER-DAEMON@MY-DOMAIN
To: claudiozgpo@mr-group.com
Subject: failure notice

Bla bla bla...

Thanks for your help and comments,
Olivier

I wouldn't worry about them.
Just configure automatic doublebounce deletion, this has been standard practice on sme6 for a long time.

For sme7 see

Hi Ray,

Thanks a lot for that, I've never tried it before (on 6.x) now it is done and works fine!
Regards,

Olivier
