XP Trust

I've gotten an error when I upgraded my desktop from 98 to XP. I'm running v5.1.2 of the server. Here is the error when I try to add a user from the domain.

The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.

I can join the domain with no problem, but when I try to login at the windows prompt I get a message saying that the domain controler is down or unaccessable.

I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem or knew how to fix it.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi,

Did you set the following registry key on the xp machine ? It is needed when doing domain logon with Xp onto a samba controlled domain.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netlogon\parameters\"RequireSignOrSeal"= dword:00000000

If you have XP Home, you can't join a domain - the function is only available in XP Pro.

You'd be better off with Win 2K.

Isn't it possible to use Samba with Windows XP Home?

I can't switch to Windows 2000 Pro because I haven't a license for this.

It should be possible to use XP home, but not with a domain.  Tell it you're connecting to a workgroup, and it should be OK.  I don't know this for sure, but it's what I've read.

I believe the XP license is a universal license. It can be down graded to 2K, ME, or 98. I'm not sure but that is what I was told. Microsoft got some heat for this license plan because this allows them to report all licensing as XP licenses.

That doesn't help you if you prefer XP (like I do).

One way I get around logging in to a domain is the following (I set up quite a few very small networks using Windows 2000 Pro as a server, which you can't log in to). Write a text file called "neton.bat". Put it in a directory and copy a short cut to your start directory. Modify permissions to "quit on exit" and "run minimized". The file should have the login script you want to run such as:

net use P: \server\directory
net time .......
you get the idea.

Make sure you have accounts set up on the e-smith server.

Hope this helps.

According to MS license you can downgrade "WinXP Home" to Win ME or Win 9x and "WinXP Pro" to Win2K Pro or Win NT workstation.

It works perfectly, as does XP Pro. I'm sat at an XP-Pro workstation right now. I avoid Domain working like the plague. Can't see why I would ever need them on single server, single segment networks.

I second that 'no-domain' option.

For home stuff, its way too much pain and suffering for what plain old Workgroups and application level stuff offers.

For larger situations, there's better forms of trust and network management (from MS and others) available.
