Getting my emails on my mobile phone
« on: September 24, 2006, 08:12:36 PM »
HI, just wondering how to get my emails from my email account on my sme server to my phone. Just bought a nokia e61 and thought about getting my emails from my server. I roughly know about pop and imap but reading in the sme manual it says that I should not do this. Am I correct that to connect to the server i use mail.domain.com, but not sure what settings should be set in the backend of my server. Also anyone know about push email, was trying to read about it but find it helpful when someone explains it to me and then i read about it, seems to make things clearer for me. Cheers.

The email on your phone is probably POP3 or IMAP.  The settings to retrieve e-mail from your SME server is pretty easy - you just need the name of your server (IP address or a resolvable name) and the user name and password will be your SME user name & password.

You will need to access your server via your phone, which means via an Internet link.  So your server will need to be accessible via the Internet.  So you can only use mail.domain.com if that resolves itself to the Public IP of your server - otherwise use the IP address (if fixed) or use a dynamic DNS service to give you a fixed host name that will always resolve to your server's public IP address.

You need to allow public access to your SME mail by setting up the server in server-gateway mode and in server-manager under email (on SME7) setting POP access to Private and Public.  This will only work if your phone supports POPS (secure POP).  You can set up remote IMAP from the same server-manager panel.

If your server isn't your gateway, then you'll need to configure whatever device is your gateway to ensure your request for POPS / IMAPS get to your server (probably by setting up port forwarding).

Alternatively you could set up a VPN first, if your phone has that facility.

I have a Nokia N90 and I use IMAPS so that I do not download the only copy of emails onto my phone!

I am able to receive emails easily, BUT I cannot send them, I always get a message on my N90 that tells me it failed, but NOT why!!

I have opened up the SSMTP and IMAPS ports on my firewall (www.freesco.org ahead of SME server) and correctly set up SME.  I know I have as I can attached via Thunderbird over the internet using SSMTP and IMAPS and it works (I do get a warning that my certificate has expired).

Any idea appreciated!!

Cheers Douglas

Generally speaking, you can only send mail via the ISP you are connected to.  So try setting your SMTP settings in the phone to be the SMTP server of your Mobile Phone network.

If you want to send via SME, (I think) you'll need SME7 (or search for relaying SMTP on earlier versions).  On SME7, in Server-Manger - Email - Change Email Reception settings.  Set SMTP authentication to allow Secure.  This will enable you to relay SMTP via your SME.  You will need to set you phone settings to use Secure SMTP (usually something like ' requires authentication' ) and use your SME user name & password to authenticate with the SME.

I have HP 6515 and SME 7.  I had to open a few ports in the router to allow the outgoing mail out.  I have ports 993 & 995 open.  You have to setup your phone for ssl connection and outgoing mail requires authentification.

Also I did a second email account and I send the emails from the main account to the phone so you will get only the new emails and not all your stored emails in the account.

Since the phone is Windows every other day I have to reset it since it will freeze or stop working the email.

I eventually tracked down the problem to an early version of the microcode in the N90 phone, and upgrading was going to be a real PAIN (thanks Nokia, their support is terrible !!).

I ended up purchasing an application called "Profimail" which was able to correctly connect to port 465 and it works like a charm!.
