Problems installing CUPS
« on: December 04, 2006, 03:58:17 PM »
I have been trying to install CUPS, using the wiki and R Van Den Akers  "How To" and RPM's" , but when I run "rpm -Uvh *.rpm I get error: Failed Dependencies: with a list of required dependencies

Then "Suggested Resolutions:" with locations on the local system that don't exist.

I did try yum localinstall, it failed also.

I changed a few items in yum.conf (enabled=1 and enablegroups=1)and was able to install foomatic, ghostscript, gimp-print, urw-fonts, hpijs, and cups. I then ran "signal-event post-upgrade" and "signal-event reboot". I still can't use or find my printer. Is there something else that I need to do to activate cups?

I have done this before with Clark Connect and IPCop, so I "think" I have some idea of what to do. I am not even close, though, to being an expert, as you may have already deduced.
I really do appreciate any suggestions and help that aanyone might have.

It is my first time using SME Server (7.0) and I like it very much, but why isn't CUPS included in the install?

I can't find any clear link to R Van Den Akers "How To" for SME 7, so here it is:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs//rvandenaker/testing/smeserver-cups/documentation/howtos/howto-install-cups.html

Since this doesn't involve any "rpm..." commands, I don't think this is the one you have been following...

SME Server uses yum to install software, this is a replacement of rpm and is able to not only resolve but also download and install dependencies from enabled repositories. This definately is the correct instruction.

I have been trying to install CUPS...

Thanks.

CUPS didn't even exist when the printing feature was added to SME server.

Moving this topic to the SME 7.x contribs forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!

rjohnson244, could you please restate your problem? Not every printer is included in CUPS.

Did you really install with the correct instructions? Like the other people said, there are no "rpm" commands in van der Akers howto.

Tires didn't exist when the automobile was invented. CB, I am not  trying to be an A55 but, it seems to me that CUPS has almost become a standard in the Linux world. SME is a fine network server, as far as I can tell.
So, I was only wondering why it's not included.

Yes, I searched everywhere that I could think of, but could only find a link to the "How To" for SME 6.0 and earlier.
Thanks for posting that link. I was able to get CUPS installed and configured on my server.
I still can't get my Windows client to connect. When I "Add Printer" on my win2kpro box I can see the printer and it installs fine but, when I print a test page "Access Denied" notification appears.

I apologize if I seem dim, but I still don't see the answer to my original question of "Why is CUPS not included in SME Server?"

Even Slackware and Debian include it and their base installs are still in the Linux "Iceage"

I find I have to specify a username and password to print to the CUPS printer connected to my server.  On Windows XP I get a dialogue box allowing me to set and save a username/password combination for the printer, but I don't remember having that box on Windows 2000.

You are correct, mmccarn, win2k does not offer the option to input a username and password. I am not familiar enough with it to find it, either.

Thanks for the thought.

I am either going to put the printer on the win2k box or just go back to Clark Connect. There seems to be more choice of configuration on it anyway. I really wanted SME to work for everything, but just don't think it will and I am tired of spending my evenings searching the forums and wiki, trying to configure my server.
