Forced to upgrade, webmail and htaccess problems
« on: February 05, 2007, 08:34:22 PM »
I had the version 6.5 (I think)running for many months, but recently it failed to reboot with some unrecoverable kernel problem. So I installed SME 7.1 without much problems except all my previous settings and email are gone.

Is there any way to bring previous settings and email back (for example via windows software to access linux drives)?

1. More importantly, I cannot access webmail from outside. The ports 993 and 995 are open (checked by external probes), and https://192.168.1.250/webmail works. Don't know what else to try.

2. Previously I used htaccess to require user and password when entering a particular web page on my server. I did write a note how I did it, but the note was cleverly put on the same disk. I did see repeated question on .htaccess in the forum regarding SME 7.xx but no answer was clear from the posts. I liked .htaccess and would use it rather than other ways.

To restore settings: Are they on the same disk (the one that you formated and installed sme7 on)?

1. Did you enable the settings in server-manager (under e-mail)?
2. Did you check the options in server-manager (under ibays)? You can set the password and access trough server-manager.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

I did both, and everything works except I cannot access webmail from outside network. I am able to putty and to use console and server-manager. My web site run on SME server works great (but not .htaccess)

To install SME 7.1 I used a new disk. Old disk with failed SME 6.5 is intact, waiting to be rescued.

Well to rescue the data from the old disk.

You can do this in two ways.

1.) Plug the disk into your computer.
2.) Use a live linux cd (any distro)
3.) Make sure that you have a portable disk or a usb key formated in FAT32
4.) Transfer data from the disk to your usb or portable

Or you can:
1.) Same as above
2.) Install vmware
3.) Install some linux distro
4.) Copy the files

I use the first option when i mess my linux or windows sistem.

As for webmail....
If i remember correctly you have an option to enable or disable access to webmail.
