How to place a SPF record
« on: November 24, 2006, 08:57:13 AM »
I get a lot of spam, most is blocked with the Spam Assasin but still I get spam in my email. When I go to http://www.dnsreport.com and check my domain it comes with that my domain does not have a SPF record.

When I search for a implementation I can only find how to create the rule http://www.openspf.org but not how to implement it in a SME server. Has someone a small howto for this?

Creating an SPF record for you own domain does not actually help you to reduce the amount of spam that you receive.

If you create an SPF record for your domain, then other email servers are able to check if an email message originating from your domain was actually sent through a legitimate host or not.

If you want an SPF record for your domain, you have to create an DNS SPF record at your DNS provider. The wizard at www.openspf.org helps you to compose the record for your domain.

Yes, have a look on the forum there are several topics on spamassasin. I personally am in favour of using Bayes filtering and have also installed LearnAsSpam/Ham scripts.
Do a search on the forum for Bayes or LearnAsSpam and you will find a lot of information.

How do I inplement the code produced by the wizard into my SME Server v7.0?

Where do I put the code?

I am new to SAIL SME Server v8b6 and have been using SME for many years.
I have already done some research and only ask questions if I still can't work it out.

Look under /etc/e-smith/templates for something todo with tinydns. When you work out what todo you will probably put it under /templates-custom

A googling of SPF and tinydns might help.

Remember, this is not going to reduce the spam coming TO you.

William

/etc/e-smith/templates/var/service/tinydns/

You don't. Your DNS publisher publishes SPF records.

I haven't looked into it and I don't intend to.

I just did mine at www.dyndns.org
