External NIC stops
« on: December 25, 2006, 11:53:01 PM »
New install sme7 the extrernal nic stops after a few minutes after searching the forum the only thing I found was that someone heard that running 2 similar nics might cause the issue. I had 2 fa311 nics I changed them to a 8139 and the onboard rhine the problem still persists and I am considering going back to 6.1

This problem is driving me nuts, If I restart the network from command prompt it will run normally few  afew minutes and then stop again seems to be the external nic, both have local ip's and I am using a router to connect adsl

Please help

A little more detail would help.  What is your exact network setup including local IP's?

Also, is there anything pertinant in your log files?

Your internal and external nics can't be on the same subnet.

Try this:

Internet
|
(Static IP from ISP)
ADSL Router
192.168.0.1
|
SME External nic 192.168.0.2
SME Internal nic 10.0.0.1
|
Local Network 10.0.0.X

Paul I am currently running SME 6 with similar addressing as described I am confused as to why 7 would differ in the addressing of nics

It doesn't work that way any more.  Setting the internal and external nics on the same subnet is NOT secure.  When you do it the external IP is on the trusted network and the external nic should not be on trusted network.

Some things that worked in 6 don't work in 7.

You need to adjust your setup accordingly.

Ok Paul sounds feasable, only thing is I will need to reconfigure entire network as I am running public mail and dns server within the network as well as several workstations no dhcp as I prefer to allocate my own ip's

Leave the internal IP alone and change the external IP to 10.0.0.2 and the ADSL to 10.0.0.1

That would probably be much easier for you.

The other thing I just thought about the sme 6 is still running on the network perhaps its also running interference I do know its not happy with 2 server gateways

Multiple SME's can co-exist on the same network very nicely if they are set up properly.  You can even have multiple gateways if you do it right.

Good luck.

If it ever worked in SME 6 you were very lucky. Paul is correct - you cannot use the same network addresses on your internal and external networks.

There you go
Charlie I started with version 4 and went right through to 6.1 never having to change the addressing system I used. I ran several installs of 6.1 so this news is   for me. I have never been none the wiser

Thanks for your input

Paul

I did a test setup as you described and all seemed to go OK dns went a bit rabbitto but I think that problem was secondary servery having hicups.
Thanks for your help, you learn something new every day
