VPN scenario, is this possible?
« on: November 28, 2006, 10:32:19 PM »
Hello, I have installed a SME-7 final on a client's network to act as server and gateway.  It is connected to the outside world thru the ISP's router as follows:

ISP Router: With Public IP 200.147.50.x
Additionally, for internal purposes, the router assigns the address: 192.168.01 for the router, and 192.168.0.2 for the client.
The server has an internal network address: 192.168.2.1, gives DHCP services, etc. ... all well with internal networking.

The thing is that I need to remotely connect to the network, but whenever I try to do so, I get a message indicating me that the VPN service is not reachable.

With the above scenario, is it possible to do VPN ?  If not, How should it be configured ?  Thank you in advance.

Superchivo;

Not an expert but this seems a bit confusing. I'm not sure where you are going with the router and the client having a different range, i.e. 192.168.0.1 etc. Also the described hardware arrangement if I visualize it properly seems complicated although you may have reasons.

Shouldn't this be through the modem? I have my sme server box as server and gateway. One lan card is direct to modem and thereby outside world. The other lan card is direct to my wireless router on inside.

My sme box is configured to be DHCP server using private range 192.168.xx.xx. I gave my wireless router a fixed address within this range and let everything else get assigned automatically. I can vpn in with no difficulty.

Anyhow that is my two cents worth. Also try this post/topic for vpn help. This is how I got going with no problem at beta 4 level.

IF it is a typical phone company unit, you may be able to set it in bridge mode so the IP address is assigned to the server instead of the router.

You may have to call tech suport as the "documentation" seems to leave this out!

Yes, bridge mode is the go. However, if you can't get it to bridge properly, just forward all ports on the router to the SME server.

I have a Billion 5400 router that won't bridge the IP address no matter what I do. So I left it in router mode and just forwarded all ports to the SME server. I'm running OpenVPN and it works a treat.
